    Its a really cool looking kit. I love the vintage look of the one lug in the middle. However, this design(while aesthetically cool) does have some tuning issues and structural issues over time. The biggest issue is the long tuning lugs can easily be bent if you are not super careful. I have experienced this with some vintage drums. Anyway, sorry if I rained on your parade. They are still beautiful drums. Thanks for sharing!

I appreciate the feedback and insight. I had an old Ludwig Club Date years ago. I had the issues with the long tension rods you spoke of in your post. Being an exuberant youth, I did manage to bend a few rods when out gigging with the kit. I think it's interesting that Ludwig basically dropped their "Downbeat" configuration in the lower end stuff but Gretsch picked it up with the new Catalina Club Classic. Ludwig reissued the old Club Date kits starting last year and Gretsch is now offering a similar long tension rod one lug product. Difference being, Gretsch offers it in with quality maple made in the USA while the other guy's stuff is made in Asia and is made with cherry and gumwood. Not bashing anyone but I'd rather have a maple versus cherry and gumwood. Call me nostalgic.  less

With this said, the drums I am presently considering are C&Cs. They have a Walnut/poplar/walnut Gladstone shell that sounds unbelievable and look very old school. I realize they are not Gretsch, but very sweet.

  Frank C Pretty good week of drumming... Last Thursday had a rehearsal with my oldies band.. Sunday played an outdoor festival in my home town with my old band (in the rain but under a tent).. And today I auditioned for a nice jazz quartet.  Guitar, upright bass, ...  morePretty good week of drumming... Last Thursday had a rehearsal with my oldies band.. Sunday played an outdoor festival in my home town with my old band (in the rain but under a tent).. And today I auditioned for a nice jazz quartet.  Guitar, upright bass, vocalist...and now ME on drums.. I have never considered myself a 'real' jazz player, but I have played jazz, standards and latin stuff over the years and tried to improve my playing over the years .. I took out my cat jazz kit, my 22 inch K flat ride.. some small sticks and brushes and had a blast.. It must have gone over well since they offered me the drum chair... Hopefully i will be able to do some local gigs with these folks n the near future  less

    Frank C ..i'm not sure about a world tour.. but I am hoping to get out of the rehearsal room and do a few gigs..i was using these 5A sticks and playing as lite as i could and still thought i was a bit too loud. it was a real effort to get dynamics at such a low...  more..i'm not sure about a world tour.. but I am hoping to get out of the rehearsal room and do a few gigs..i was using these 5A sticks and playing as lite as i could and still thought i was a bit too loud. it was a real effort to get dynamics at such a low volume.. i think that this is going to be a great experience for me and i'm looking forward to it

Our church has a wonderful piano/organ player and very beautiful singers but very rarely do we have any other instruments .. once in a while a guitar, harp or flute. Our church has a wonderful piano/organ player and very beautiful singers but very rarely do we have any other instruments .. once in a while a guitar, harp or flute. One time they had a drummer and it was really very nice.. he actually had a beautiful set of Gretsch drums.. it must be great to have a full band on a regular basis
